I’m going to miss my little brother! 🥺
Most people know him as an NHL player.
I know him as my little brother.
The guy who spends the summer training at the gym. Rolling in with his Starbucks half asleep. Teasing me. Supporting my goals. Blasting his music. Making me laugh uncontrollably. Unapologetically ourselves no matter who’s around. Steal each other’s car keys and cellphones. And who lets me attack him with hugs at any given moment.
But it wasn’t always that way.
A couple years ago, I judged a book by its cover. He was cold, stand off ish, kinda arrogant, and just not friendly at all.
So, I just walked up to him and said “ hey, what sport do you train for?” He looked at me like “ how the fuck does this girl not know I’m an NHL player.” And said; “ I play hockey.”
I have zero knowledge on hockey, let alone who the players in the NHL are, so I said “ oh cool, like professionally? Or for fun?” And he burst out laughing and said “ professionally.”
The rest is history. Since that moment, I named him little bro. He may be taller but he is younger. And what better nickname than little bro.
I wanted to share this little story to remind you to never judge a book by its cover. To give people second chances. To not put people on pedestals because of their titles. To not make assumptions. And to meet people where they are for who they are on the inside.
I am a little, a lot sad that I won’t be able to see him every single day at the gym as of tomorrow, but that also means there’s something exciting to look forward to the next time he’s in town.
Wishing him the best hockey season yet! And I guess I now have a team to cheer for. Let’s go Vancouver!!
